A taste of Italy in Madrid

Madrid has a little bit of many countries from around the world and Italy is most definitely one of them. You can see this just by entering places like Lauricca, an Italian deli where the owner greets you in Italian and that sells delicious food such as mortadella of Bologna, different types of pasta, fresh gnocchi and ready-made dishes such as lasagna, gourmet sandwiches and pizzas. It’s the Italian version of the classic German deli Mantequería Alemana, also not to be missed, but let’s stick within Italian borders for now.

If you would like brunch with an Italian twist, The Place is actually… well, the place to go. Located on Calle Noviciado, 16, it opens on Saturdays and Sundays from 1.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. and serves Italian delights such as porchetta, slow-roasted boneless pork and the Viking Veggie vegan sandwich, a great option even for meat lovers.

However, if you want a proper Italian meal with the wooden tables and the red and white checkered tablecloth, go for a meal at Trattoria Santarcangelo, next to El Retiro. With more than 20 years of experience behind it, offers an intimate atmosphere with exquisite decoration that makes it an ideal option for the start of autumn. The food is excellent value for money (30 euros per person approx.) and it offers a wide range of dishes, of which we recommend the gnocchi with gorgonzola and walnuts.

If you fancy something to drink, enjoy a refreshing Aperol Spritz at Italiana Madrid, on Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 10, very close to Plaza de la Luna. Its Italian owners serve it the way it should be served, with traditional 60s Aperol Spritz coasters included. They also serve good coffee and homemade cakes like tiramisu.

If you are taking your better half out for dinner, Come Prima is an excellent option. Located in the district of Las Letras (Calle Echegaray, 27), this restaurant lures its clients with its charm and not just by offering pizza. Its decoration is one of its strongest points, with a friendly, unpretentious and elegant touch with orange colours. Don’t miss out on its fresh pasta dishes with truffle twists and its tiramisu, topped off with a glass of amaretto.

Buon appetito!
